Learning to trust the process when the Holy Spirit plants something in your heart
Have you ever walked down the gardening aisle at your local store and marveled at the neat rows of seed packets? Each one comes with a clear picture and detailed instructions. Want to grow peas? There's a packet for that, complete with a photo of what your harvest will look like. Herbs? Spices? Different vegetables? The packaging tells you exactly what you're investing in and what to expect.
If only following God's call worked the same way.
When There's No "Packaging" for Spiritual Seeds
Here's what I've learned through years of ministry and life experience: when the Holy Spirit downloads something into your heart, you don't get the benefit of seeing the packaging that tells you what the fruit will be for your future impact. There's no "Holy Spirit grocery store" where we can browse the aisles and select our calling with full knowledge of the outcome.
This reality can be both terrifying and beautiful.
When God plants a seed in your heart—whether it's a calling to start a ministry, write a book, launch a business, serve in a specific way, or step into leadership—you're essentially planting something without knowing exactly what will grow. Unlike those store-bought seeds with their predictable outcomes, God's seeds require something much more challenging: faith.
The Challenge of Spiritual Gardening
The thing about spiritual seeds is that they're usually bigger than us. You're not just developing a hobby or pursuing a personal interest. You're cultivating something that God intends to use as a blessing, not just for you, but for others. The ripple effects of your obedience may extend far beyond what you can imagine.
But here's the catch—and it's a big one. It's hard spiritually to know what we're growing. When the Holy Spirit tells you to do something, step out in faith, or pursue a particular path, the uncertainty can be overwhelming. We want to see the end result. We want to know it's going to work out. We want guarantees.
Being Faithful to Finish
This is where faithfulness becomes crucial. We must be faithful to finish so that we can see the fruit of what God has placed in our hearts.
I'll be honest with you—this is one of my greatest personal challenges. I love starting things. New projects excite me. Fresh visions energize me. But finishing? That's where the real work begins. That's where faith is tested and character is developed.
The growth, the fruit, and the benefit of what God is calling us to do happen when we push through the uncertainty and actually complete what He's started in us. It happens when we tend to that mysterious seed day after day, even when we can't see progress. It happens when we choose faithfulness over our feelings.
You Have No Idea What's Coming
Here's what I want you to remember: You have absolutely no idea what's on the other side of a God-seed.
That calling you've been hesitant to pursue? That dream that seems too big? That nudge from the Holy Spirit that you've been ignoring because you can't see how it will work out? You don't know what's waiting on the other side of your obedience.
Maybe it's a ministry that will impact thousands. Maybe it's a conversation that will change one person's life forever. Maybe it's a business that will provide for your family and create jobs for others. Maybe it's a book that will encourage someone going through the exact struggle you've overcome. Maybe it's simply the character development that happens within you as you learn to trust God's process.
The beautiful truth is that God's seeds are designed to produce fruit far beyond what we can imagine. They're meant to be blessings that multiply and impact lives in ways we never could have planned or predicted.
Practical Steps for Seed-Tending
So how do we tend to the seeds God plants in our hearts?
Start where you are. You don't need to see the entire staircase to take the first step. Begin with what you know, with what's in front of you.
Stay faithful in the small things. Consistency in the little daily actions builds the character needed for bigger assignments.
Resist the urge to quit when things get unclear. Uncertainty is part of the journey, not a sign that you're on the wrong path.
Surround yourself with encouragers. Find people who will remind you of God's faithfulness when your own faith wavers.
Keep a record of God's goodness. Document the small wins, the doors that open, the confirmations along the way.
Trust the Gardener
Remember, you're not gardening alone. The same God who planted the seed in your heart is the one who will bring about the harvest. He's not asking you to figure it all out—He's asking you to be faithful to the process.
Your job isn't to understand the full picture. Your job is to tend to what's been entrusted to you, water it with your faithfulness, and trust that God knows exactly what He's growing in and through your life.
So whatever God has planted in your heart—whether it's something brand new or something you started and abandoned—I encourage you to pick up your gardening tools again. Be faithful to finish. Stay committed to the process.
Because I promise you this: you have no idea what's on the other side of that God-seed, and it's going to be far more beautiful than anything you could imagine.
All the Best,
